11.5 Million sign up for Obamacare despite Republican promise to repeal

Republicans keep saying that they need to repeal Obamacare right away because the program is failing. Well according to the latest data from the Department of Health and Human Services, Republicans are very wrong. Obamacare is working, and working well.

As of the end of 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services says that 11.5 million people had signed up for private insurance using either HealthCare.gov, the federally run marketplace, or one of the many state-run websites.

The 11.5 million sign-ups figure represents a slight increase from the number who signed up by the end 2015. Which again confirms that Obamacare isn’t failing as Republicans are claiming.

And people can still sign up for Obamacare until January 31, 2017.

30 million could lose coverage if Obamacare is repealed

Obama Administration officials point to studies that say that 30 million people could lose coverage and health insurance prices could spike dramatically if Republicans repeal key parts of Obamacare but delayed the repeal for several years to give them time to come up with a replacement.

“It’s important to remember that repeal-and-delay ultimately means gambling on millions of people’s health care on the assumption Congress will pass a replacement plan,” said Benjamin Wakana, spokesman for U.S. Health and Human Services Department Secretary Sylvia Burwell.

“The stakes are too high on moving forward with repeal and not knowing what comes next yet,” Wakana said.
