Eric Holder wants Democrats to work to reshape ‘rigged’ Congressional maps

Eric Holder, the former attorney general in the Obama Administration, urgently called on Democrats Thursday to focus their attention on state elections and redrawing “rigged” congressional districts.

“Presidential elections are obviously important, but we lost sight of the fact that if you want to have a representative in Congress, you’ve got to make sure that you have state legislatures that are drawing districts that will yield a representative in Congress,” Mr. Holder said.

Eric Holder when referring to the existing congressional district maps as the “biggest rigged system in America is gerrymandering.”

Mr. Holder spoke during an appearance at the Center for American Progress, where he announced that he was launching the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC). Holder will lead, the group that will aim to influence the way districts are redrawn after the 2020 Census.

The group is a first for Democrats, while Republicans have been working to influence the drawing of congressional districts often funded heavily by wealthy Republican donors like the billionaire Koch brothers.

Joining Eric Holder will be President Barack Obama, who plans to spend some of his post-presidential time working with Mr. Holder’s NDRC’s.

Eric Holder announced that the organization will focus on three areas: making electoral gains in governors’ races and other state contests relevant to redistricting, arming Democrats with the legal support for court fights over district maps and trying to impact the ballot initiatives that are aimed at changing the maps.

“I think what we are seeing now is gerrymandering on steroids,” Holder said.
