These 8 men have more wealth than the poorest half of the world

According to a new study by Oxfam, these eight super-rich men have the same amount of wealth as the poorest half of the world’s population.

The eight uber-rich dudes are: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the American side. And Carlos Slim, the Mexican tycoon, and Amancio Ortega, the Spanish founder of a retail giant Zara among the non-Americans.

The combined wealth of these 8 men totals $426 billion.

The so-called “bottom half” of humanity totals more than 3.6 billion people who live mostly in the developing world.

According to the Oxfam study, “Left unchecked, growing inequality threatens to pull our societies apart,” citing Brexit, Trump’s campaign and “a worrying rise in racism and the widespread disillusionment with mainstream politics.”

Oxfam goes on to note that, in 2016, the world richest 1 percent held slightly more than half of the wealth of the entire planet. And that the 1,810 billionaires on Forbes’s list hold $6.5 trillion, as much wealth as 70 percent of humanity.
