CBO: 18 Million to Lose Insurance in First Year If Obamacare is Repealed

The Congressional Budget Office just released a report on the expected effects of the Republican plan to repeal of Obamacare immediately but keep some elements of the coverage expansion in place for two years.

And their analysis shows that at least 18 million people will lose their insurance in the first year and that people trying to buy insurance in the private market will face up to 25% higher premiums.

The CBO analysis throws cold water on the Republican claim that there will be an “orderly transition.”

Long-term consequences even worse

And those are just the immediate consequences of the Republican’s “repeal-and-delay” plan. According to the CBO analysis, once the Obamacare tax credits and Medicaid expansion is fully repealed, millions more Americans would lose health insurance and premiums would again spike.

The CBO analysis says that in the end, 32 million more Americans would be uninsured and premiums would be double what they would have been if Obamacare was kept in place.

The report from the CBO was requested by Democrats and it is likely to complicate the Republican’s plan to repeal Obamacare and will set the stage for a long fight between Republicans and the Democrats.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said of the CBO analysis, “Nonpartisan statistics don’t lie: it’s crystal clear that the Republican effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act will increase health care costs for millions of Americans and kick millions more off of their health insurance. The numbers are even worse than experts could have imagined: tens of millions will lose their health insurance, and individuals will see their premiums double. This is exactly why Republican members of Congress are getting an earful back home from constituents who want them to turn back from their dangerous plan to make America sick again.”

Summary of CBO findings:

  • 18 million people would lose health insurance in the first year if Obamacare is repealed
  • 32 million people would lose health insurance within 10 years if Obamacare is repealed
  • First-year premium spike would be 25% if Obamacare is repealed
