California Governor Jerry Brown struck a defiant tone in his annual State of the State speech in Sacramento on Tuesday. Brown offered the strongest rebuke yet of Donald Trump and the Republican agenda.
Brown vows to defend California’s values
Brown vowed to defend California’s laws and values saying, “When we defend California, we defend America. We must prepare for uncertain times and reaffirm the basic principles that have made California the great exception that it is.”
Governor Brown’s speech came just 4 days after Donald Trump’s inauguration.
“They can’t change the facts”
Brown also tore into Trump’s propaganda minister Kellyanne Conway, saying, “We’ve seen the bald assertion of ‘alternative facts,’ whatever those are.”
He also said about the Trump administration’s seeming tenuous relationship with the truth, “Whatever they do in Washington, they can’t change the facts. And these are the facts: The climate is changing, the temperatures are rising and so are the oceans.”
Brown will defend California’s undocumented residents
And on immigration and protecting undocumented Californians, Governor Brown said, “We may be called upon to defend those laws, and defend them we will. And let me be clear: We will defend everybody — every man, woman and child — who has come here for a better life and has contributed to the well-being of our state.”
