Trump and team need to change the subject ASAP
It looks like Donald Trump and his team are hoping to change the subject. There is no doubt that Donald Trump has had a pretty rough first couple days with self-inflicted controversies including:
- His false claim that “millions of illegals” voted in the 2016 election and cost him the popular vote
- Trump’s bizarre rant in front of the CIA’s Wall of Stars memorial
- Sending his press secretary out on day one to bully the press and lie about his crowd size.
And with this series of unforced errors, you can imagine Trump and team would like to change the conversation.
So here comes the wall
The New York Times is reporting that tomorrow “President Trump on Wednesday will order the construction of a Mexican border wall — the first in a series of actions this week to crack down on immigrants and bolster national security, including slashing the number of refugees who can resettle in the United States and blocking Syrians and others from ‘terror prone’ nations from entering, at least temporarily.”
However, it is unclear exactly how much wall Trump can build via executive order because it is likely not legal for him to move already appropriated funds from other places to build his wall. Which means he will need to get Congress to appropriate new money for it.
Trump tweeted on Tuesday night, “Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow Among many other things, we will build the wall!”
The New York Times went on to say, “Mr. Trump will sign the executive order for the wall during an appearance at the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, as Mexico’s foreign minister, Luis Videgaray, arrives in Washington to prepare for the visit of President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico. Mr. Peña Nieto will be among the first foreign leaders to meet the new president at the end of the month.”
