Trump Labor Dept. Pick Hired An Undocumented Worker For Years

(Note: To be clear, we don’t write this because we want to cast the hiring of an undocumented worker as a negative. Rather we are attempting to point out the hypocrisy of a president who spent the entire campaign blasting undocumented workers as the cause of all our nation’s problems but then forgives the hiring of undocumented workers when his billionaire friends do it.)

According to multiple reports, Andy Puzder, Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Labor, admitted on Monday that he had employed an undocumented immigrant for years.

“My wife and I employed a housekeeper for a few years, during which I was unaware that she was not legally permitted to work in the U.S.,” he said in a Monday statement.

“When I learned of her status, we immediately ended her employment and offered her assistance in getting legal status. We have fully paid back taxes to the IRS and the State of California and submitted all required paperwork.”

According to the Huffington Post, that woman declined the offer to assist her with documentation because she was afraid she would be detained or deported.

Puzder is the CEO of CKE Restaurants which is the parent company of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s.

Trump hypocrisy in plain view

This is not the first Trump Cabinet pick to admit they hired undocumented workers, and Trump shows no indication of wanting to remove his pick as a result of the new information. Despite the fact that Trump spent the entire campaign and his presidency thus far, blasting undocumented workers with an unending list of pejoratives.

And the Huffington Post notes that previous president’s picks have been disqualified by similar findings of undocumented employees. The Huffington Post said, “Zoe Baird, President Bill Clinton’s first nominee to become attorney general, withdrew after it emerged she had hired an undocumented nanny, and her story became a cautionary tale for nominees going forward. (Clinton’s second nominee, Kimba Wood, was also withdrawn over her employment of an undocumented immigrant as a nanny.)”
