Trump Administration Begins Massive Deportation Effort
Earlier this week, we saw one of the first deportations happen live on Facebook – watching a mother who has lived in the United States for over 20 years being pulled away from her children.
But it’s just getting started. Trump originally pledged to deport as many as 3 million undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Last month, he substantially broadened the scope of who the Department of Homeland Security can target to include those with minor offenses or no convictions at all. Which is why the mother mentioned earlier was torn away from her family.
According to the Washington Post, “Immigration officials confirmed that agents this week raided homes and workplaces in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, the Los Angeles area, North Carolina and South Carolina, netting hundreds of people.”
However, Washington Post adds that immigration activists said the crackdown went beyond the six states DHS identified – seeing raids in Florida, Kansas, Texas and Northern Virginia.
According to David Marin, ICE’s field director in the Los Angeles area, 160 people detained in the operation this week in Southern California alone. And, according to The Hill, another 200 arrests were made in Atlanta.
