Democrats Hold Majority in Delaware State Senate
In a special election for Delaware State Senate District 10, Democrat Stephanie Hansen beat Republican John Marino 58 percent to 40 percent – a decisive victory for Democrats.
Republicans had voiced a slight hope they might win and thus secure a one-vote margin in the 21-seat Senate that was tied 10-10 going into the special election. Special elections typically have low turnouts – which favor Republicans.
High profile Democrats came out in support of Hansen. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley appeared at a rally and knocked on doors for her in the district along with the three members of Delaware’s congressional delegation.
This win – along with a DNC Chair finally picked – may energize Democrats heading into some of the other special elections held in the next few months, as well as the larger elections later this year in New Jersey and Virginia.
