Reporter Who Got Trump Taxes Thinks Trump Could Have Leaked Them Himself
As soon as the story of Donald Trump’s tax returns broke speculation grew about who the anonymous source is. The story was published by David Cay Johnston received the tax returns in the mail from an anonymous source.
Johnston seemed to think there is a very strong likelihood that it was Trump himself who leaked the returns.
“It’s entirely possible that Donald sent this to me,” David Cay Johnston said on The Rachel Maddow Show.
“Donald Trump has over the years leaked all sorts of things, the very sleazy girl-on-girl pictures of the first lady in the New York Post may have come from Donald. The front pages of the state tax returns… that were sent to the New York Times… last fall may have come from Donald. Donald has a long history of leaking material about himself when he thinks it’s in his interest.”
Also of note is that the Trump tax returns were marked with a “Client Copy,” suggesting that Trump himself, or someone close to Trump released the returns.
The timing was also called into question because Trump is in the middle of pretty rough stretch of news with the disastrous CBO report finding and the Russia investigation hearings that will start in Congress tomorrow.
