13 Million Sign Up For Obamacare Despite Republican’s Best Efforts
So much for that whole “Obamacare is collapsing” theory. Despite the best efforts of Republicans to sabotage it, Obamacare seems to be thriving. For the 2017 plan year, 13 million people signed up for health coverage, which is essentially in line with the Obama administrations expectations.
According to the AP, 12.2 million signed up nationally and another 765,000 signed up for “the Basic Health Plan, which is used by two states, New York and Minnesota,” which brings the total to roughly 13 million people.
The 13 million sign ups come as Donald Trump and Republicans have tried to sabotage Obamacare enrollment. During the final days of the sign up period the Trump administration canceled the final week of advertising meant to remind the people about the the deadline, despite the fact that the ads had already been paid for. The sign ups also came in the face of Republican rhetoric about repealing Obamacare.
The 13 million sign ups through the exchanges doesn’t include the nearly 12 million people who have gained coverage through Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion.
The strong enrollment numbers come at the same time that a new Gallup poll found that Americans favor Obamacare over the Republican health plan by a 2 to 1 margin.
