Senator McCaskill Will Vote No On Gorsuch, Ensures Filibuster

With courageous vote, Senator McCaskill ensures that Neil Gorsuch will need to surmount 60 votes.

Senator Claire McCaskill announced on Friday that she will stand with fellowDemocrats and filibuster Neil Gorsuch’s nomination. McCaskill’s vote ensures that Gorsuch will need to overcome a 60-vote margin

McCaskill released a statement on Friday saying Gorsuch displays a “stunning lack of humanity.”

“I cannot support Judge Gorsuch because a study of his opinions reveal a rigid ideology that always puts the little guy under the boot of corporations,” she wrote.

The announcement from McCaskill also displays notable courage because she is facing reelection next year in a largely red state that Donald Trump carried in 2016.

Senator McCaskill’s announcement also puts the spotlight on Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to see if they will invoke the “nuclear option” and change the Senate rules doing away with the filibuster.

“I cannot and will not support a nominee that allows dark and dirty anonymous money to continue to flood unchecked into our elections,” McCaskill said.

McCaskill also noted that Gorsuch was far outside the best interests of Missourians saying, “Donald Trump farmed out this important decision to a right-wing group that fronts for large corporations and special interests. Donald Trump promised Missourians that he would look out for the little guy, for working people, for the forgotten. He promised he would drain the swamp of the special interests, the lobbyists, and politicians who have overlooked the working people in this country.”
