EDITORIAL FROM PROGRESSIVE POST DAILY:
Mitt Romney Shouldn’t Run For Senate, He Should Run For President
There were several reports Thursday that Mitt Romney is considering a run for Senate in Utah in 2018.
It seems Romney wants a way to serve his country – that is noble. And while the Senate can use more moderate Republicans, Romney shouldn’t do it.
Mitt Romney should run for president in 2020.
Let us be clear, we would far prefer a progressive president. In fact, if Romney was the Republican nominee our sincere hope would be for the progressive to win and Romney to lose. But Romney is a serious person and would be a serious president. Donald Trump is neither of those things. Romney would be better for the country than Trump.
Romney should challenge Donald Trump in the Republican primary. It would be the most patriotic act possible from Romney- the greatest service he could do for his country.
Romney knows that Donald Trump is not fit to be president, he said as much during the campaign. And deep down most Republicans know this too. Donald Trump is mentally unstable and has no business in this job.
Many Republicans held their noses and voted for Trump in 2016. If Romney runs, moderates and movement conservatives would welcome him.
It might return coherence to the Republican party’s ideology. But that is not why Romney should run.
Romney should run because this country is in trouble, deep and frightening trouble. And while Romney is far too conservative for our taste – he is also a reasonable, sober and emotionally balanced person. We’d be fortunate to have 8 years of Romney as president compared to even 8 more weeks of Trump.
It’s not clear if Romney would win. But even if he doesn’t it would still be the patriotic and courageous act that the Republican party and this country needs.
There should be a real and thorough debate between the Romney wing of the Republican party and the Trump wing. That debate never happened in 2016. There were too many candidates and the idea of Trump was still too fantastic for people to believe.
But if Trump is the incumbent and Romney challenges him there will be no option but to have a real debate on Trumpism and Americans will have an opportunity to evaluate that.
Mitt Romney, if you are listening – please run for president.
