Trump Deportation Force Is Arresting Noncriminals: Report
The surge in immigration arrests under the Trump administration is leading to thousands of law-abiding immigrants being arrested and targeted for deportation.
According to the Washington Post, “Arrests of immigrants with no criminal records more than doubled to 5,441, the clearest sign yet that President Trump has ditched his predecessor’s protective stance toward most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.”
The surge in immigration raids is causing unintended community safety issues in cities around the country. Los Angeles and Houston have noted massive drops in the reporting of sexual assault in Latino communities meaning that victims are afraid to come forward.
Immigration advocates note that despite the fact that President Obama deported more undocumented immigrants than any other president that “Obama sought to avoid deporting longtime immigrants with roots in their communities and American-born children.”
Deportation arrests surged in the first few months of the Trump administration. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities made 21,362 arrests from January 20 to March 13 of this year, including 5,441 non-criminals, according to The Washington Post.
And the 5,441 noncriminal undocumented immigrants arrested is more than doubled the number of noncriminal arrests in either 2015 or 2016.
