Trump Makes Insane Statements Proving He Doesn’t Understand The Civil War
Trump: “People don’t ask the question, but why was there the Civil War?”
During an interview with the Washington Examiner, Donald Trump made several bizarre statements about the Civil War proving he lacks a basic understanding of U.S. history.
Trump wondered why the issues the led to the Civil War “could not have been worked out” to prevent war. We presume Trump means why the issue of slavery couldn’t be worked out but it’s impossible to know with Trump.
Donald Trump also began to heavily praise President Andrew Jackson, who was a slave owner, saying that if Jackson was president the Civil War would not have happened.
Trump said Jackson “was really angry that he saw what was happening in regard to the Civil War.” But here’s the thing, Andrew Jackson died in 1845, 16 years before the Civil War started in 1861.
Trump then said, “People don’t ask the question, but why was there the Civil War?” Well to answer your question Mr. Trump, the Civil War started from several years of disputes between the North and South about slavery and states’ rights.
Here is the exchange:
RUMP: [Jackson] was a swashbuckler. But when his wife died, did you know he visited her grave every day? I visited her grave actually, because I was in Tennessee.
ZITO: Oh, that’s right. You were in Tennessee.
TRUMP: And it was amazing. The people of Tennessee are amazing people. They love Andrew Jackson. They love Andrew Jackson in Tennessee.
ZITO: Yeah, he’s a fascinating…
TRUMP: I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn’t have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart. And he was really angry that — he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, “There’s no reason for this.” People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War — if you think about it, why? People don’t ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?
