Senate Democrats And Three Republicans Block Effort To Repeal Obama-Era Drilling Rule

Republicans fail to undo major component of President Obama’s climate change legacy. 

In a surprise move, Senate Republicans were unable to muster the votes to repeal an Obama-era drilling rule. Three Republicans joined Senate Democrats Wednesday rejecting the Republican bill to overturn an Obama administration regulation that limits methane emissions from oil and gas drilling.

Senate Democrats were joined by three Senate Republicans in blocking the bill. The failure to undo the regulation is a significant loss for Republicans who identified the methane regulation as a priority in undoing President Obama’s significant climate change and environmental legacy.

In addition to all 48 Senate Democrats, Republican Senators Lindsey Graham, Susan Collins and John McCain also voted against overturning the environmental rule.

Senator Mike Pence was brought to the Capitol in anticipation of the need of for a tie-breaking vote.
