Robert Reich: ‘An Impeachable Offense’ If Trump Removed Comey To Avoid Investigation

“The law is reasonably clear. If Trump removed Comey to avoid being investigated, that’s an obstruction of justice – an impeachable offense.”

One of the leading voices of the RESISTANCE just made the case for impeaching Donald Trump. Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich posted a new blog piece entitled “The End of Trump” making the case that it’s not a matter of if there are grounds for impeachment, but rather when Republicans will put country before party.

“Trump’s statements last week about his firing of former FBI director James Comey provide ample evidence that Trump engaged in an obstruction of justice – a major charge in impeachment proceedings brought against Richard M. Nixon and Bill Clinton,” Reich noted.

Reich pointed out that Donald Trump’s obstruction of justice could be far worse than either Nixon of Clinton. “It involves an investigation about whether Trump or his aides colluded with Russia in rigging a presidential election – the most direct assault on American democracy in history,” Reich wrote.

“The law is reasonably clear. If Trump removed Comey to avoid being investigated, that’s an obstruction of justice – an impeachable offense.”

Reich also points out in his blog post that seeking to interfere with an investigation is an impeachable offense. “Seeking to silence, intimidate or even influence someone who is likely to offer evidence in a congressional or criminal proceeding is also an obstruction of justice – and an impeachable offense.”

But Reich isn’t delusional about the hyperpartisan nature of our politics. He notes that the odds of impeachment in this Congress are near basically zero meaning that a Democratic take over in 2018 will likely be the deciding factor for impeachment.
