GOP Health Care Bill Puts The House In Play For 2018: Poll
A new poll from Public Policy Polling illustrates just how politically disastrous the Republican Obamacare repeal plan is for the party. According to the new poll, the Republican health care bill puts the House in play for Democrats in 2018.
Voters hate the Republican health care plan
In a memo, Public Policy Poling said: “The American Health Care Act has been a complete disaster politically for Republicans.”
The poll found that just 25 percent of voters support the Republican bill while at the same time 52 percent oppose it.
Additionally, voters by a 20 point margin say that they are less likely to vote for a member of Congress who supported the Republican bill – 47 percent of voter say they are less likely while just 27 percent say that they are more likely.
“House Republicans passed a health care bill that doesn’t even have majority support within their own party,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling.
Strong voter support for Obamacare
As has been found in other recent polls, the Republican push to repeal Obamacare has helped contribute to a surge in popularity of President Obama’s signature health care law. The poll found that 53 percent of voters say that they prefer Obamacare to the Republican plan while 27 percent say they prefer the Republican plan.
Additionally, 64 percent of voters would prefer to keep Obamacare and make any necessary fixes while just 29 percent of voters want to repeal the law.
Democrats have considerable advantages heading into 2018 election
In a generic ballot, voters say that that prefer Democrats over Republicans 48 percent to 38 percent and among voters who say that they are “very excited” to vote in 2018 Democrats have a 27 point advantage.
“The main thing the bill seems to have done is get Democrats even more fired up for 2018 than they were already,” Debnam said.
