Independent Senator Angus King of Maine said that he now “reluctantly” believes that impeachment is on the table for Donald Trump after reports that he asked former FBI Director James Comey to end the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
In an interview on CNN Tuesday evening, Wolf Blitzer asked Senator King if the news story would bring lawmakers “closer to the possibility of yet another impeachment process.”
“Reluctantly, I have to say yes, because obstruction of justice is such a serious offense,” King responded.
“I say it with sadness and reluctance. This is not something I have advocated for, or the word has not passed my lips in this whole tumultuous three of four months.”
“If indeed the president tried to tell the director of the FBI who worked for him that he should drop an investigation whether it was Michael Flynn or whether it was some investigation that had nothing to do with Russia or politics or the election,” he added, “that’s a very serious matter.
The New York Times first reported Tuesday that Comey wrote in a memo after meeting with Donald Trump in February in which the president asked him to “see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go.”
