Donald Trump’s Approval Rating Just Hit A New Low
After what has been a disastrous two weeks for his presidency, Donald Tump left the country for his first foreign trip on Friday. According to a new poll, Donald Trump may be leaving the country at just the right time because his approval rating just hit an all-time low.
In the new Reuters/Ipsos poll, Donald Trump’s job approval rating stands at just 38 percent, a new low for that poll. At the same time, 56 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing.
“Public approval of President Donald Trump has dropped to its lowest level since his inauguration, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday, after Trump was accused of mishandling classified information and meddling with an FBI investigation,” Reuters reports.
Trump is starting to lose Republican support
Donald Trump’s approval rating has been very low for his entire presidency, with Democrats and independents largely disapproving of Trump. However, until now Republicans have maintained strong support for Trump – well we just saw the first signs of eroding support from Trump base in the new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
“Among Republicans, 23 percent expressed disapproval of Trump in the latest poll, up from 16 percent in the same poll last week. The decline in support from Republicans appears to be a primary reason why Trump’s overall approval rating is now at the lowest level since he took office,” Reuters notes.
You can see from the graph above Republican approval of Donald Trump has begun to slip over the last few days and at the same time Republican disapproval of Trump has jumped up noticeably.
The reason this poll’s findings are so significant is that hat Trump’s strong support from his Republican base has functioned as his firewall. And members of his party have been scared to take strong stands against Trump out of fear they will face retaliation from their own party. If Trump’s Republican support continues to slip we will likely see more Republicans breaking from Trump.
