Flynn Forced To Turn Over Documents In Russia Investigation
It looks like Michael Flynn’s attempt to roadblock the congressional investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal has officially backfired.
After invoking the Fifth Amendment in order to avoid turning over documents related to the Russia probe, the Senate Intel Committee issued Flynn’s businesses with a subpoena for records. Businesses cannot invoke the Fifth Amendment.
According to a new report by the Associated Press as well as the Wall Street Journal, “Mike Flynn will now turn over documents from his businesses to the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to a person familiar with the matter, easing the possibility of a protracted legal standoff over his cooperation with the panel’s investigation.”
According to the Wall Street Journal report, Flynn will start turning over both business and personal documents to the committee as soon as next week.
“Those records had been subpoenaed by the Senate as part of an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including questions about whether anyone in President Donald Trump’s orbit colluded with foreign agents,” the Wall Street Journal notes.
Flynn has emerged as a central player in the Trump-Russia investigation.
The news the Flynn will hand over documents comes on the same day that it was revealed that Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen and a former Trump campaign aide Boris Epshteyn have both been asked by congressional investigators to hand over their own documents and communications related to Russia.
