Trump, Sessions and Kushner Met With Russian Ambassador In Previously Undisclosed Meeting
On Wednesday news broke that Congress is investigating a previously undisclosed meeting between the Russian ambassador and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Then just hours later, Senator Al Franken confirmed the meeting and also indicated that the Senate had asked the FBI to investigate whether Sessions had perjured himself.
And now, according to a report by NBC News, we learn that not only did Sessions meet with Ambassador Kislyak during a Trump campaign stop but that Donald Trump and Jared Kushner were also at the private meeting.
According to NBC News, “Five current and former U.S. officials said they are aware of classified intelligence suggesting there was some sort of private encounter between Trump and his aides and the Russian envoy, despite a heated denial from Sessions, who has already come under fire for failing to disclose two separate contacts with Kislyak.”
Sessions lied during his Senate confirmation hearing about three meetings with the Russian ambassador and also failed to disclose the meetings on security clearance forms.
Jared Kushner also failed to disclose several Russian contacts on his security clearance forms.
CNN has confirmed that the Senate has asked the FBI to investigate the meeting between Sessions and Kislyak and whether Sessions perjured himself.
NBC News also reported, “A U.S. official with knowledge of the matter told NBC News has learned that the FBI also is scrutinizing the Mayflower event, which was sponsored by a pro-Russian think tank. The official said the FBI is interested in who was at the event and what was said, in the context of the counter-intelligence investigation into Russian election meddling.”
During an interview on MSNBC with Lawrence O’Donnell, Senator Franken said about the meeting “It had been characterized one way, but we had some reason to believe that wasn’t the case.”
“It had been described in a way that he could say, ‘I don’t remember that,” Franken continued.
