Trump’s Approval Rating Down 11 Points Among Republicans Since Day 100
New Poll Confirms Trump’s Base Is Deserting Him.
The new CBS News poll released Tuesday found that Donald Trump’s approval rating is at an all-time low of 36 percent.
Importantly, much of the drop in Trump’s approval rating over the last few months has come from erosion in his base.
According to the CBS News poll, since his 100th day in office, Donald Trump’s approval rating among Republicans has dropped 11 points.
In the new poll, 72 percent of Republicans approved of Trump’s job performance, while just 9 percent of Democrats approved.
On his 100th day in office, the same CBS News poll found that 83 percent of Republicans approved of Trump’s job performance while just 10 percent of Democrats did.
Until recently, it was generally accepted by political pundits and DC insiders that Donald Trump, while incredibly unpopular by traditional standards, has a very strong, essentially immovable base of support.
The CBS News poll confirms that Trump’s base of support is, in fact, eroding.
Trump’s eroding base was first observed by Nate Silver who noted, “There’s been a considerable decline in the number of Americans who strongly approve of Trump, from a peak of around 30 percent in February to just 21 or 22 percent of the electorate now. (The decline in Trump’s strong approval ratings is larger than the overall decline in his approval ratings, in fact.) Far from having unconditional love from his base, Trump has already lost almost a third of his strong support.”
About the poll: The CBS News poll was conducted by telephone and surveyed 1,117 adults nationwide from June 15–18, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
