The Senate Republican Health Bill Is Finally Out, Here Are The Details
Senate Republicans on Thursday finally released a draft of their long-awaited Obamacare repeal bill.
Here is what we know:
Summary: Wealthy and healthy will do very well. Poor, middle class and sick people get crushed.
Medicaid: The Republican bill includes massive cuts to Medicaid. Obamacare has extended Medicaid coverage to about 11 million people in 31 states. The Senate bill’s dramatic cuts to Medicaid are actually harsher than the House bill.
States would also be able to impose work requirements for people on Medicaid.
Tax cuts for wealthy: The bill also repeals billions of dollars in taxes on the wealthy.
Planned Parenthood: As promised, the GOP bill defunds Planned Parenthood. Health experts expect the defunding of Planned Parenthood to result in an increase in unwanted pregnancies as a result of less access to contraceptives.
Government’s role in health care market: The bill essentially ends Obamacare’s government commitment to health care with a limited system of federal payments.
Tax credits to help people buy private coverage become much less generous under the Republican plan than currently under Obamacare.
Mandate: The Republican bill ends the Obamacare’s mandates to buy coverage.
