Russians Suspected To Be Behind Hacking Of Nuclear Plant: Report
According to a new report, Russia is the prime suspect behind the hacking of more than a dozen power plants, including a nuclear power plant, in the United States.
Bloomberg reported on Thursday that three people close to the effort to expel the hackers pointed to Russia as the primary suspect in the hacks.
“There was absolutely no operational impact to Wolf Creek,” a spokeswoman for the nuclear plant told Bloomberg News.
“The reason that is true is because the operational computer systems are completely separate from the corporate network.”
The Bloomberg report included a joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security and FBI who confirmed the intrusion but didn’t name a suspect.
“There is no indication of a threat to public safety, as any potential impact appears to be limited to administrative and business networks,” the agencies said.
A cybersecurity firm told Bloomberg “We’re moving to a point where a major attack like this is very, very possible.”
The report of the Russian hacking of U.S. power plants comes just one day before Donald Trump is set to meet with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit.
