Trump And Advisers Trying To Figure Out How To Fire Sessions: Report
After several days of publically undermining his Attorney General, a new report confirms that Donald Trump and his advisers are actively trying to find a way to fire Jeff Sessions.
According to The Washington Post, Trump and several White House advisers are “floating prospects who could take his place were he to resign or be fired, according to people familiar with the talks.”
Firing and replacing the Attorney General is part of Donald Trump’s attempt to undermine and eventually stop Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into his campaign and his subsequent attempts to obstruct justice. The Washington Post report notes, “Replacing Sessions is seen by some Trump associates as potentially being part of a strategy to fire special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and end his investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with the Kremlin to influence the 2016 election, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.”
Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation after it was revealed that he had several meetings with the Russian ambassador during the campaign. Because of Sessions’ recusal, the deputy attorney general assumed responsibility for the Russia investigation.
And after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Deputy General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as Special Counsel to lead the Russia investigation.
