The Senate Just Blocked Trump From Making Recess Appointments While Senate Is On Break
Lisa Murkowski just proved she’s Donald Trump’s biggest nightmare in the Seante.
In another sign that Congress, especially the Senate, is working to limit Donald Trump’s ability to obstruct justice and interfere with the Speical Counsel’s investigation – the Senate just voted to block Trump from making any recess appointments while Congress is on break.
The move was led by Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski who moved to lock in nine “pro-forma” sessions that would officially keep the Senate in session.
Blocking Trump’s ability to make recess appointments requires the agreement of every senator.
The Senate will now officially be in session every three business days throughout the August recess, even though Senators and Senate staff have already left town.
This is not the first time that the Senate has used this technique to block recess appointments by a president. Most recently it was done by Republicans to prevent President Obama from being able to fill a vacant Supreme Court seat.
However, today’s move is remarkable because Republicans currently hold control in the Senate but they clearly don’t trust Donald Trump.
Donald Trump has publically attacked Jeff Sessions igniting fears that Trump will try to fire Sessions in order to replace him with an Attorney General who is willing to fire Special Counsel Rober Mueller.
Murkowski, of course, was one of three Republicans in the Senate to vote against Trump’s Obamacare repeal bill.
