In a stunning statement from a U.S. president, Donald Trump thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday for expelling 755 American diplomats from Russia.
Trump made the statement during a rare press availability from his vacation at his Bedminster, N.J. golf club.
Trump said Putin had done him a favor because it allows the government to “cut down our payroll.”
“I want to thank him because we’re trying to cut down our payroll and as far as I’m concerned I’m very thankful that he let go of a large number of people because now we have a smaller payroll,” Trump told reporters.
“There’s no real reason for them to go back. I greatly appreciate the fact that we’ve been able to cut our payroll of the United State,” he continued. “We’re going to save a lot of money.”
Putin announced in July that the U.S. diplomatic mission in Russia must cut its staff by 755 personnel. Putin said he had lost patience that its relationship with the U.S. would improve.
Putin’s announcement came after the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly passed new sanctions targeting Russia which Donald Trump was forced to sign.
