FBI Raids Californian Republican Congressman’s Office
According to court documents, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter’s office was raided by the FBI in late February.
Hunter and his campaign treasurer are part of an ongoing criminal investigation into misuse of campaign funds.
Allegedly, Hunter used tens of thousands of dollars in campaign funds for personal expenses, including more than $1,300 in video game purchases and a plane ride for his pet rabbit, court documents show.
In the FBI raid, officials “seized several computers, tablets and iPads, bills and disbursement records, as well as a computer hard drive, from Election CFO, an Alexandria, Virginia.-based company that handled the California Republican’s campaign finances,” according to Politico.
Politico adds that the raid was included in a warrant filed with the Eastern District of Virginia and signed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Nachmanoff.
In March, Hunter told Politico he did nothing wrong, but would not say who was responsible for the campaign expenses.
“I was not involved in any criminal action,” Hunter said. “Maybe I wasn’t attentive enough to my campaign. That’s not a crime.”
Hunter has already reimbursed his campaign about $62,000.
This payment covers oral surgery, a family trip to Italy and Disneyland gift shop purchases.
Hunter’s most recent campaign finance reports show he has spent $336,664 with seven law firms this year, much of that since the House Ethics Committee announced it was stalling its investigation to avoid interfering with the FBI’s work.
