Trump Insisted On Talking About Economic Numbers In Charlottesville Statement: Report

It was Trump’s idea to talk about the economy at a moment of national tragedy.

You know that disastrous presidential statement Trump gave about the violence in Charlottesville over the weekend …the one where he didn’t condemn Nazis but made sure to talk about economic numbers..?

Well, it turns out Trump insisted on including the economic numbers in the statement, according to a new report by CNN.

“We are told by our White House team — and this is as telling as it gets — the president insisted on putting those economic remarks at the top of his statement before he got to the events in Charlottesville, before he got to his denunciation of the KKK and other hate groups,” CNN’s John King reported on Monday.

“That was the president’s call,” King added.

Trump was roundly criticized for failing to condemn white supremacists and neo-nazis after the violence that erupted in Charlottesville.

On Monday morning, Kenneth Frazier, the chairman and CEO of Merck, who is an African American, announced that he’s resigning from Donald Trump’s White House advisory council because of Trump’s response to the Charlottesville tragedy.

In a statement, Frazier said, “America’s leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry, and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal.”
