Mueller Closes In On Donald Trump Jr Over 2016 Russia Meeting
Trump’s son is now at the center of the Russia investigation.
Robert Mueller and his investigators are now focusing in on Donald Trump Jr.’s now infamous Trump Tower meeting with several Russian nationals who promised support for the Trump campaign from the Russian government.
According to a new report by BuzzFeed, the Special Counsel is “trying to determine his intent when he attended a controversial June 9, 2016, meeting with a Russian lawyer, according to a source familiar with the investigation.”
Trump Jr. was accompanied in the meeting by Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner.
Email exchanges released by Trump Jr. revealed that a Russian lawyer (with close connections to the Kremlin) was offering damaging information about Hillary Clinton as part of the Russian government’s effort to help Donald Trump’s campaign. Trump Jr. responded to the messages simply saying “love it.” And also directed his associate that later in the summer would be a helpful time for damaging information about Clinton to leak.
Special Counsel prosecutors are working to “determine exactly what information was provided and are scrutinizing Trump Jr.’s statements about the meeting.”
As Buzzfeed notes, “Requesting or accepting anything of value for a presidential campaign from a foreign national violates federal election law.”
In addition to investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Mueller’s team is also investigating obstruction of justice by Trump in firing James Comey and attempting to shut down the investigation into Mike Flynn.
Mueller is also reportedly investigating financial dealings of Trump and those around him.
