Tillerson Hits Trump, Says He ‘Speaks For Himself’ Not America (Video)

The Secretary of State just said the president doesn’t speak for the nation.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Sunday that the president “speaks for himself” when he was asked about the president’s values and response to the racially charged violence in Charlottesville.

The obvious implication being that Trump does not speak for the nation.

“I don’t believe anyone doubts the American people’s values or the commitment of the government or the government’s agencies to advancing those values and defending those values,” Tillerson told Chris Wallace on “Fox New Sunday,” adding “the president speaks for himself.”

“We express America’s values from the State Department. We represent the American people. We represent America’s values, our commitment to freedom, our commitment to the equal treatment of people in the world,” Tillerson said when asked about whether it was difficult to push American values.

“And that message has never changed,” he added.

Tillerson’s comments come a few days after Donald Trump’s economic adviser Gary Cohn said he felt “enormous pressure” to resign over Trump’s response to Charlottesville.

“This administration can and must do better in consistently and unequivocally condemning these groups and do everything we can to heal the deep divisions that exist in our communities,” Cohn said.

“I have come under enormous pressure both to resign and to remain in my current position. As a patriotic American, I am reluctant to leave my post… But I also feel compelled to voice my distress over the events of the last two weeks… Citizens standing up for equality and freedom can never be equated with white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the KKK.”
