Mueller Has An Earlier Version Of Trump’s Comey Firing Memo: Report
Special Counsel has an early “problematic” version of Comey firing memo that White House Counsel didn’t want to get out.
Special counsel Robert Mueller has obtained a letter that Steven Miller helped Donald Trump draft just days before the president fired former FBI Director James Comey, the New York Times is reporting.
The letter reportedly shows the president’s reasoning for Comey’s dismissal.
However, after White House counsel Donald McGahn reviewed the letter he quickly advised Trump against sending the letter. McGahn believed the contents of the letter to be problematic, The New York Times reports.
At the time, Trump told aides at the time that he was angry that Comey refused to publicly say the president was not being investigated as part of the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
The letter Comey eventually received was a new letter drafted by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, which focused on his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
The existence of a different, earlier letter has the potential to pose more trouble for Donald Trump who is facing an obstruction of justice investigation because of his firing of the FBI Director.
Trump’s explanations for Comey’s firing have shifted several times so the existence of an earlier letter could hold more accurate explanation of Trump’s reasons for firing Comey.
