Credit Reporting Company Equifax Announces Data Breach Affecting 143 Million Americans
Massive data breach at Equifax
The social security numbers and drivers licenses of 140 million Americans were exposed, according to a new announcement from Equifax.
Equifax, which is one of the three major credit reporting, announced a breach to its computer systems Thursday.
Equifax said that the breach led to unauthorized access to Social Security numbers and birthdates of up to 143 million U.S. consumers.
The cyber intrusion occurred between May and July, according to the company.
Exifax says that the issue was discovered July 29, and that they working with a cybersecurity consultant and government authorities on an investigation.
The company has launched a website for people to check whether their information was affected and to sign up for credit-monitoring services.
