Mueller ‘Going For The Kill’ On Trump In Russia Investigation: Report
The Special Counsel is closing in on Trump.
Associates of the Trump White House are increasingly convinced that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is “going for the kill” in his investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to a new report from Axios.
“Republicans close to the White House say every sign by Mueller — from his hiring of Mafia and money-laundering experts to his aggressive pursuit of witnesses and evidence — is that he’s going for the kill,” Axios notes.
The report goes on to note that Trump’s allies are worried about how unprepared the Trump White House is for a public fight with Mueller – they worry that every time Trump and his lawyers release statements it tends to backfire.
The nervousness from Trump world comes as Mueller has clearly stepped up his investigation and is moving closer and closer to Trump himself. We learned last month that Mueller has impaneled a new grand jury in Washington DC and has issued subpoenas relating to Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Kremlin lawyer. And the team that Mueller has built has been characterized as a “Dream Team” of financial and white collar crime prosecutors.
The Axios report also points out that Trump allies are increasingly concerned about how close Mueller’s investigation is getting to Trump himself. “The focus on Michael Cohen, a Trump lawyer and confidant whose business dealings are intertwined with the president’s, has been particularly troubling for those in Trump’s close orbit. Cohen dealt with some colorful characters. And when plans for the Trump Tower in Moscow are fully picked apart, other questionable Russian characters may be drawn in,” Axios notes.
Axios also notes that “Mueller is burrowing in hard on the obstruction of justice angle.”
