Trump Using Campaign Cash To Pay For Russia Defense: Report
We just found out why Donald Trump has been fundraising so aggressively.
Donald Trump is the only president in history to open a campaign committee in the first year of his first term, and now we know why.
President Trump is paying for his Russia legal defense using campaign cash, a new report by Reuters reveals.
According to the report, Trump is using money donated to his re-election campaign and the Republican National Committee to pay for his lawyers in the ongoing investigation of Russian meddling in the election.
The first payment from his campaign account has already been made and will be reflected in campaign finance filings.
“The U.S. Federal Election Commission allows the use of private campaign funds to pay legal bills arising from being a candidate or elected official,” Reuters reports.
“While previous presidential campaigns have used these funds to pay for routine legal matters such as ballot access disputes and compliance requirements, Trump would be the first U.S. president in the modern campaign finance era to use such funds to cover the costs of responding to a criminal probe, said election law experts.”
It’s worth pointing out that Donald Trump is a billionaire (or so he claims) so his use of campaign funds to pay for his legal defense is particularly unusual.
