After an initial clash, the IRS is now sharing information with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators about key Trump campaign officials, CNN is reporting.
As CNN notes, the IRS initially pushed back against the Mueller,”Part of the concern centered on the far-reaching and broad requests from Mueller’s team. In the case of Manafort, Mueller’s investigators are reaching back 11 years as they investigate possible tax and financial crimes, according to search warrant documents.”
The disagreements appear to have been worked out.
“After several months of being at odds, one source said, the IRS Criminal Investigation division is now sharing information about campaign associates, including Manafort and former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn. The sharing happened after the two camps reached an agreement following consultation with officials at the Treasury Department,” CNN went on to report.
The revelation that the IRS is sharing information indicates that Mueller has a grand jury subpoena, which would be required for such sensitive financial information.
The CNN report went on to note that Manafort was already under criminal investigation by the IRS since before the election for possible money laundering and tax fraud.
Trump tax returns
The report did not reveal whether the cooperation between Mueller’s investigators and the IRS includes Donald Trump’s tax returns. However, according to CNN’s sources “if Mueller’s office does have Trump’s returns, then Rosenstein, who oversees the probe, likely would have needed to sign off, given the sensitivity surrounding the matter.”
