Mueller Now Investigating $2 Million In Donations To Trump By Russia-Linked Americans
Three Russia-linked Americans donate millions to RNC and Trump inaugural fund.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team is now investigating about $2 million in contributions to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign by three donors with “significant Russian business connections,” according to ABC News.
The ABC report notes that “The timing of contributions coming from US citizens with ties to Russia is now being questioned by investigators for special counsel Robert Mueller, according to a Republican campaign aide interviewed by Mueller’s team.”
The report that the Special Counsel is investigating campaign contributions comes as a new report reveals that the IRS is sharing information with Mueller’s investigation.
Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), who is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told ABC News that the contributions would likely be of interest to investigators.
“Obviously, if there were those that had associations with the Kremlin that were contributing, that would be of keen concern,” Schiff said.
“A review of Trump campaign records conducted by the Center for Responsive Politics for ABC News found large contributions coming from two émigrés born in the former Soviet Union who now hold U.S. citizenship, and from a third American who heads the subsidiary of a large Russian private equity firm,” according to the report.
The donations in question were first funneled to the Republican National Committee at the same time that Donald Trump was on the cusp of securing the Republican nomination. Then two final donations totaling $1.25 million were made to Donald Trump’s inauguration fund.
This a good time to remember that during the now infamous Trump Tower meeting with Russian officials, Manafort wrote a cryptic note on his phone saying “Active sponsors of RNC.” As the ABC News report notes, the phrase led investigators to view it a reference to campaign donations.
