At Least 10 Million Saw Russian-Bought Facebook Ads Company Admits
Facebook reveals how many Americans saw ads bought by Russian agents.
Likely just the tip of the iceberg.
In a new blog post on Monday Facebook revealed that 10 million people saw political ads purchased by Russian agents during the 2016 campaign and shortly afterward.
The Russians bought 3,000 ads which were served to 10 million Facebook users.
Russia’s Internet Research Agency spent $100,000 in Rubles on the Facebook advertising.
The revelation from Facebook comes as the company faces increasing pressure about its role in the Russian intelligence attack on the 2016 election.
It is important to note that these numbers only apply to the Kremlin-linked “Internet Research Agency” disclosure by Facebook. But intelligence experts and members of Congress have stressed that this is likely just the tip of the iceberg.
“The American people deserve to see the ways that the Russian intelligence services manipulated and took advantage of online platforms to stoke and amplify social and political tensions, which remains a tactic we see the Russian government rely on today,” House Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat, Congressman Adam Schiff, said in a statement on Monday.
