Senators Announce Bipartisan Deal To Fix Trump’s Obamacare Sabotage
The deal would protect subsidy payments for low-income Americans.
Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) announced Tuesday that they have reached a bipartisan deal to stabilize Obamacare, reversing Donald Trump’s sabotage of the landmark health law.
The deal would extend the Affordable Care Act’s key subsidy payments to insurers for low-income Americans for two years. The deal would also give states more flexibility to change Obamacare rules.
The full details of the deal are not yet available, but here is what we know:
- Extend Obamacare subsidy payments for two more years and for the remainder of 2017. Along with other premium support.
- Guaranteed funding of $106 million in enrollment outreach funding in 2018 and 2019 to boost enrollment.
- There will be a so-called “copper plan” that will allow people over 30 years old to buy a cheaper policy with lower premiums.
- Funding to help states launch reinsurance programs that would help cover the costs of insuring the least healthy Americans.
- Allow states to more quickly seek waivers from some Obamacare requirements.
