Trump’s Base Is Eroding, New Poll Finds
Donald Trump is losing support among key groups that helped propel him to the White House.
It’s become almost a political matter of fact that Donald Trump’s base of support is so strong that his supporters will never leave him. And while Donald Trump has been consistently and broadly unpopular in poll after poll, his approval rating has seemed to have a floor in the low to mid-30s.
But a new poll published this week offers evidence that Donald Trump’s base is in fact eroding.
According to the new Pew poll, Donald Trump’s approval rating stands at just 32 percent – an all-time low. But the poll also found that Trump’s support among the key groups that helped propel him to the White House is starting to slip.
Here are some of the key findings from the Pew poll:
- Trump’s support among Republicans has slid from 84 percent in February to 76 percent today.
- Trump’s approval rating among whites has slipped from 49 percent to 41 percent.
- White evangelicals have a 61 percent approval rating on Trump, down from 78 percent in February. The biggest drop among all of Trump’s base.
- Trump’s approval rating among whites without a college degree has slipped 56 percent to 46 percent.
- And among voters over 50, another segment of Trump’s base, the president’s support has fallen from 47 percent to 38 percent.
The Pew poll results confirm a trend first pointed out by FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver back in May.
