Trump’s Lawyers Are Negotiating Terms For Interview With Mueller: Report
President Trump could be interviewed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of Russia investigation.
Donald Trump’s legal team is in negotiations with the federal investigators about the details for a possible interview between the president and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, NBC News reported Monday.
Trump’s lawyers have been involved in ongoing discussions with the FBI as part of the investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
Trump’s team is attempting to avoid a sit-down interview between Trump and Mueller and instead hoping to answer the Special Counsel’s questions via an affidavit, NBC reports.
However, Special Counsel Robert Mueller could still compel the president to do a sit-down interview by getting a grand jury subpoena.
“The discussions were described by one person with direct knowledge as preliminary and ongoing. Trump’s legal team is seeking clarification on whether the president would be interviewed directly by Mueller, as well as the legal standard for when a president can be interviewed, the location of a possible interview, the topics and the duration. But the president’s team is also seeking potential compromises that could avoid an interview altogether, two of those interviewed told NBC News,” the report notes.
