A Judge Just Blocked Trump’s Plan To End DACA
California judge rules that Trump’s effort to end DACA must be halted temporarily.
A federal judge in San Francisco ruled Tuesday to temporarily blocked President Trump from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
DACA was established by President Obama to protect undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children from being deported.
Judge William Alsup said that DACA must remain in place while lawsuits over Trump’s decision to end the program are pending.
In his ruling, Alsup said the Department of Homeland Security’s “decision to rescind DACA was based on a flawed legal premise.”
And as a result, DACA recipients who failed to renew their status by last year’s deadline will now have a chance to submit renewal applications.
However, new applications may not be submitted.
The DACA program gave legal protection to about 800,000 young people living in the United States.
The judge’s decision to block Trump’s plan to end DACA throws an addition wrench into the already chaotic process of making a deal on immigration in Congress.
