GOP Rep. Says Children Are Better Off In Orphanages Than Gay Adoption

“Somebody mentioned orphanages before,” he says. “I mean, orphanages are still a possibility for some kids.”
Republican Congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey suggested that orphanages are better for children than gay adoption during an event at a New Jersey high school, according to a newly released audio tape.
The audio was first released by the Washington Blade on Wednesday.
Smith told students at Colts Neck High School in May that he does not support same-sex adoption, The Blade reported Wednesday.
In the audio tape, a high school student says she has an older gay sister who wants to adopt a child with her partner.
“I just wanted to know if you think that, based on household studies, she would be less of a legitimate parent and why she couldn’t adopt a child?” she asks.
“The the issue, legally, is moot at this point especially with the Supreme Court decision,” Smith replies, an apparent reference to the 2015 legalization of same-sex marriage. “She’s free to adopt.”
“Right, but why do you think she shouldn’t be able to adopt a child?” the student replies.
That’s when Smith started mumbling his hate.
“There are many others who would like to adopt who can acquire a child … the waiting periods are extremely long,” Smith said.
When pressed by a different constituent, Smith says, “In my opinion, a child needs every possibility of …”
