The former NASA astronaut announces his next mission: unseating Republican Martha McSally.
Mark Kelly, retired NASA astronaut and husband of former Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, announced his campaign Tuesday that he will run for Senate in Arizona in 2020.
“I always knew that I was going to serve this country in some way,” said Kelly. “It becomes pretty obvious pretty early when you get into space that we’re all in this together,” he said.
Kelly made the announcement in a video posted to his Twitter account:

The seat is currently held by Republican Martha McSally who was appointed to the open seat after losing to Kyrsten Sinema in November 2018.
Mark Kelly has never held political office but became politically active after his wife, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot in a 2011 assassination attempt at a Tucson supermarket. Six people died in the attack. Giffords resigned from Congress in 2012 to focus on her recovery.
