Senate Republicans Cancel This Week’s Obamacare Repeal Vote
Obamacare fight is over…for now.
Republican leaders on Tuesday decided not to hold a vote this week on their last-ditch effort to repeal Obamacare.
The decision comes after it became clear Republicans didn’t have enough votes to pass the legislation.
Republicans face a deadline of September 30 for repealing Obamacare through a process known as budget reconciliation which allows budget-related bills to pass with a 51 majority vote rather than the traditional 60 votes.
According to Axios, “At the GOP caucus lunches this afternoon, the bill’s sponsors — Sens. Bill Cassidy and Lindsey Graham — asked not to hold a vote, after it became apparent the bill wouldn’t pass. Leadership wants them to announce that decision, aides said.”
Despite repeated failures, Republicans have begun discussing the idea of using next year’s reconciliation process to again try to repeal Obamacare. Republicans had originally planned to use this year to repeal Obamacare and next year for tax reform.
