Senate parliamentarian rules that GOP tax bill violates “Byrd rule.”
Republicans hit yet another roadblock on their path to passing their massive tax scam bill.
On Tuesday, the Senate parliamentarian ruled that the Republican tax bill’s short name, “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” violates the budget rules.
According to the office of Senator Bernie Sanders, the title violates the “Byrd rule” which applies to bills under the “budget reconciliation” process.
Republicans are using the reconciliation process to so they can pass their tax bill with a simple majority rather than a 60 vote majority.
The rule requires reconciliation bills to only include provisions that have an impact on the budget.
“The short title has no budgetary impact,” said Sanders spokesman Josh Miller-Lewis.
“They have to strike it and use the official title: ‘An Act to provide for reconciliation pursuant to titles II and V of the concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal year 2018.’ ”
Republicans will need to change the name of the bill before they can vote on it again.
