After A Year Investigating Russia, GOP Recommends Charges Against Steele
Republican Senators want the author of the Trump-Russia dossier charged with crimes.
Yes, you read that right. Republicans want to charge the person who blew the whistle on Russia with a crime.
Republicans just proved they have no interest in actually investigating the Trump-Russia scandal.
On Friday, two Senators Republicans announced they want the Justice Department to charge Christopher Steele – the author of the Trump-Russia dossier – with criminal charges.
According to The New York Times, “Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a senior committee member, told the Justice Department they had reason to believe that… Steele lied to federal authorities about his contacts with reporters regarding information in the dossier, and they urged the department to investigate.”
The announcement that after a full year of investigating Russia, the first and only criminal referral that Senate Republicans are making is against the person who first sounded the alarm that Trump had connections to Russia.
The accusation against Steele is that he may have misstated to federal investigators when he spoke with reporters.
The New York Times also notes that the Republican referral “appears to make no assessment of the veracity of the dossier’s contents, much of which remains unsubstantiated nearly a year after it became public.”
