Steve Bannon Just Got Subpoenaed By Mueller To Testify Before Grand Jury
Bannon’s testimony will be key in the obstruction of justice case against President Trump.
Special Counsel Mueller has subpoenaed Trump’s top campaign official to testify before a grand jury in the Russia investigation.
Donald Trump’s former campaign chief and senior White House strategist Steve Bannon has received a subpoena from Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before a grand jury in the Russia investigation, The New York Times reported.
According to the report, “The move marked the first time Mr. Mueller is known to have used a grand jury subpoena to seek information from a member of Mr. Trump’s inner circle. The special counsel’s office has used subpoenas before to seek information on Mr. Trump’s associates and their possible ties to Russia or other foreign governments.”
The news of the subpoena comes on the same day that Bannon appeared before the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation for testimony.
The New York Times report notes that the subpoena for Bannon’s testimony likely came at least in part due to the bombshell book Fire and Fury in which Bannon is quoted saying that Donald Trump Jr.’s behavior was “treasonous.”
“Mr. Mueller issued the subpoena after Mr. Bannon was quoted in a new book criticizing Mr. Trump, saying that Donald Trump Jr.’s 2016 meeting with Russians was “treasonous” and predicting that the special counsel investigation would ultimately center on money laundering,” The New York Times notes.
Mueller likely wants Bannon to testify to President Trump’s motivations behind the firing of FBI Director James Comey as part of an obstruction of justice probe.
