DNC Votes To Reduce Influence Of Superdelegates In Presidential Primaries
The Democratic Party just made the process for choosing the party’s presidential candidate a bit more democratic.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) voted Saturday to accept new language reducing the influence of superdelegates in the presidential primary process.
The DNC voted during its winter meeting accepting the need to reduce the influence of the party’s powerful leadership giving the power to the voters.
The language voted on Saturday resolved to address the “perceived influence” of superdelegates, though the official changes wont be made until this summer.
The move comes after the bruising primary process in 2016 in which Bernie Sanders and his supporters argued that the superdelegate process gave establishment figures like Hillary Clinton and unfair advantage.
DNC Chair Tom Perez called the move a “milestone.”
“The Democratic Party is stating loudly and clearly that the status quo will change,” he said.
“When our work is complete, our 2020 nomination process will be the most fair and transparent in the history of American presidential politics.”
